Office - To Go or Not To Go?

A disclaimer on what this article is not: This is not an opinion on whether we should be in the office, remote etc. This is not a conversation about fairness and the right thing companies should do, avoiding bias etc. This is a blog post about what I do and what I think works for an employee with ambitions to grow within a hybrid work policy organization.

If you’re early on in your career, there is a lot of alpha in being in the office. Do it, no questions asked. There is a lot to be learned by watching experienced people doing their thing. It’s a quick way to learn and saves everyone the hassle of going back and forth on slack, zoom or God forbid, Microsoft teams. You will learn quickly.

The second reason I argue for people to be in office, is visibility. If it’s a hybrid org, and the senior leaders are coming to office, at some point it will backfire for you to not show up.

Obviously, it doesn’t overwrite the fact that you have to do good work and advocate for yourself in the workplace, when it comes to promo cycles, and it’s down to two people that are up , all else being equal - the candidate that the leaders saw more often is likelier to get the bump up.
